The minor subjects were poetry, drama, astrology, composition & synonyms. The major subjects included logic, fine arts, Sanskrit grammar, and medicine. The spiritual leader began his monastic education at the age of six. Bodhisattvas are realized beings inspired by a wish to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings, who have vowed to be reborn in the world to help humanity. The Dalai Lamas are considered to be the demonstrations of Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion and the patron saint of Tibet. And then at the age of two years, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the previous 13 th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso. Later on, Lhamo Thondup was renamed Tenzin Gyatso. I suggest that a person who is or can become a true friend is not judgmental. People with social anxiety often worry about what others might think of them. “Those who mind don’t matter Those who matter don’t mind” – Dr. ![]() This is a good quote to cite in a conversation with patients with irrational worries. “I’ve had many worries in my life, most of which never came true” – Mark Twain.I explain that learning to accept and embrace the current situation is often the first step towards coping better. “Whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should” – Max Ehrmann.I have found the following quotes to be especially helpful for these patients. More than half of my patients suffer from anxiety as a primary issue or because of difficulties dealing with a physical or other mental health issue. This quote reinforces the idea that we can learn how to better cope with physical and mental discomforts. Along the same veins, I provide this quote: “Your best teacher is your last mistake” – Ralph Nader I explain that people learn best through trial and error. This is a good quote to give perfectionists who must learn to temper their expectations. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work” – Thomas Alva Edison. This quote is very apropos for my patients who feel stuck when they persist in working to change something that is not in their control. “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference” – Reinhold Niebuhr.I often use this quote to suggest a good approach to large projects or life journeys, which can seem overwhelming. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” – Lao Tzu.Thus, “try” is a word that implies failure and should be avoided. Further, when we talk about having tried something, it is usually in the context of having failed to achieve our goal. However, when we act, we usually achieve some measure of success. I usually follow up the presentation of this quote by explaining that when we try to do something, we leave room for failure. “Do or do not There is no try” – Master Yoda.I add to this the idea that sometimes what lies beyond the open door turns out to be even better than what we leave behind the closed door. “When one door closes, another door opens But we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the one that has opened for us” – Alexander Graham Bell. ![]()
